WHERE IS STAFFA?

Staffa is an uninhabited Scottish Island of the Inner Hebrides. Staffa lies 6 miles west of the Isle of Mull and is often accessed by boat from Iona. Its area is 82 acres and the highest point is 138 feet above sea level.

The name Staffa comes from the Old Norse for stave or pillar and describes the columnar basalt rocks which make the island so distinctive. Similar formations are found at the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, on the island of Ulva and at Ardmeanach on the Isle of Mull.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY JEWELLERY?

In order to prolong the finish and appearance of your Staffa Jewellery:

Store your jewellery separately, so it doesn’t rub & scratch against each other, ideally in the packaging provided or in a ziplock bag to reduce tarnish from oxidisation. Damp and hot conditions will also cause jewellery to tarnish.

Remove jewellery when undertaking physical activities such as exercising, swimming, cleaning or gardening. Do not wear your jewellery overnight.

Perfume and cosmetic products can react and cause silver to tarnish. Apply your hair or skin products before you put on your jewellery.

HOW DO I CLEAN MY STAFFA JEWELLERY?

A soft brush (an old toothbrush is ideal) with washing-up liquid is best. On the silver (not oxidised) pieces you can also use an abrasive kitchen pad to return the piece to a satin finish. We do not recommend the use of silver dip solution.

If you have any questions or queries feel free to get in touch.

WHAT IS OXIDISED SILVER?

A piece of blackened or oxidized silver is true sterling silver, but it’s surface has been intentionally darkened by a sulphide which speeds up the natural tarnishing process. Although this patina isn’t permanent, it will wear beautifully.  The wear over time will become unique to you since it reflects how you’ve worn it throughout your life.  We can happily re-patina any piece of jewellery you purchase from us free of charge should you wish.

WHAT IS HALLMARKING?

Hallmarking refers to the independent verification of the precious metal content. All of the products in the Staffa jewellery collection are verified independently by the Assay office in Edinburgh. This is done through the 700 year old practice of hallmarking and a hallmark is only applied after the item has been assayed to determine that its purity conforms to both legal standards and metallurgical content.

The 1973 Hallmarking Act stipulates that all silver articles weighing more than 7.78 grams must be hallmarked in order to be described as such. Articles below this exemption weight may be described as silver without the need for a hallmark. This means that an Edinburgh Hallmark will only be present on heavier items – these include the Bangles, Cufflinks, Necklets and Pins. Earrings and Pendants fall below this weight threshold.

All Staffa jewellery is made using 100% Recycled Sterling Silver unless commissioned otherwise.

DO YOU GIFTWRAP?

Yes! All Staffa Jewellery comes in an debossed linen box with a magnetised closing. Literature and cards are also included detailing the inspiration behind Staffa Jewellery. No invoice or receipt is included as these are often gifts. We are phasing out all plastic packaging and focusing on recycled and recyclable products.

CAN I MIX AND MATCH OXIDISED AND NON-OXIDISED SILVER EARRINGS?

Of curse! we love this option – Just add a note when you are purchasing or get in touch if you want to discuss this further.
